Accounts of the beauty of the area and the unique culture of the people have been recorded in diaries, letters, and books for more than 150 years. So the development of a museum to collect, preserve, and interpret the natural, historic and artistic heritage of this region was inevitable. Your visit will be a memorable occasion. All visitors are asked to register at the reception desk in the Main Gallery. The Museum has a no-smoking policy throughout the entire facility, which includes the Woltz Clock Tower. No video cameras or flash cameras may be used in the Museum. Requests to use still cameras should be made at the reception desk at the time of registering. The Shot Tower Historical Park Interstate 77 Exit 24; North on RT. 52 for 2 miles Overlooking the New River, The Shot Tower was built in the 1800 to make ammunition for fire arms of the early settlers. Lead from the nearby Austinville Mines was melted in a kettle atop the 75-foot tower and poured through a sieve, falling through the tower and an additional 75-foot shaft beneath the tower into a kettle of water. For a small fee, guests may ascend the tower which is on the National Register of Historic Places. Believed to be the only one of this particular design in the world. Grayson Highlands State Park
This mountain park is next to the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area in the Jefferson National Forest. Grayson Highlands State Park was originally named Mount Rogers State Park and was established in 1965. Pets are allowed in the park but not allowed inside public facilities including the bathhouses, visitor center and office.
Pilot Mountain (336) 325-2355 1792 Pilot Knob Park Road Pinnacle, NC 27043 Approach from any direction and see Pilot Mountain rising more than 1,400 feet above the rolling countryside of the upper Piedmont plateau. Dedicated as a National Natural Landmark in 1976, this solitary peak is the centerpiece of Pilot Mountain State Park. Fun, from relaxation to exhilaration, is easy to find here. Treat yourself to a horseback ride through the woods or challenge the river from raft or canoe. A seven-mile woodland corridor joins two sections of the park, each section offering a wealth of opportunities for outdoor fun. The mountain segment, which includes the two pinnacles, contains most of the visitor facilities. Cumberland Knob Blue Ridge Parkway Milepost 217.5 Galax, VA Located near the Virginia state line, Cumberland Knob at milepost 217.5, elevation 2,885 feet, was the first recreational area completed on the Blue Ridge Parkway back in 1937. On the 1,000 acres at Cumberland Knob you can picnic, hike, listen to interpretive talks by rangers or simply marvel at the view. A pleasant 20-minute loop, the Cumberland Knob Trail is an easy paved walk of only a half-mile, starts at the visitor center, swings through a picnic area and up to the Cumberland Knob overlook shelter. This is a good leg-stretching trail, especially if you’ve been riding the Parkway without a stop. It’s a good one for kids too. For those wanting a bit more...try the two-hour loop trail from the center into Gulley Creek Gorge. Drinking water, restrooms, a book shop and a public telephone are available. Woodlands and open fields, housing a variety of birds and other wildlife, are ideal for leisurely walks or a more demanding hike to nearby Gully Creek.

Buffalo Mountain Buffalo Mountain is one of the most significant natural areas in Virginia. It boasts an amazing 13 rare plant occurrences, 3 rare animal occurrences, and 6 significant natural communities. The combination of high-elevation (3,971 feet), wind-exposed openings at the summit, and magnesium rich soils make it unlike any place else in the Commonwealth. The south face of the mountain contains grassy, prairie-like openings composed of wildflowers and native warm-season grasses more typical to the Midwest than to the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Picnic Area at Groundhog Mountain BR Parkway, Mile marker 188.8 Fancy Gap, VA This picnic area is ideal for stopping to enjoy the great outdoors with delightful scenery while you enjoy a picnic. Many picnic tables are available with outdoor grills. There are walking areas nearby, including the Groundhog Mountain observation tower. The elevation at Groundhog Mountain is 3,035 ft. A restroom facility is available. Just south of the picnic area is the Pilot Mountain Scenic Overlook.
Devil's Den Nature Preserve Birding and Wildlfe Trail Old Appalachian Trail, Fancy Gap, VA 24328 This trail system is a part of the statewide Birding and Wildlife Trail system of the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. The trail system is the first statewide program of its type. Carroll County has four trails within the Blue Ridge Highlands Loop. This attraction is a unique private nature preserve located just off the Blue Ridge Parkway on crest of the Blue Ridge Escarpment. Devil's Den refers to a 600-million-year-old cave formation on the side of a mountain. The cavern is unique in that it was formed by the movement of rock. The preserve contains 280 acres. Much of the tract is situated atop the mountain crest and is open meadow with forest on the slope. Trails cross the tract. Open sunrise-sunset, May-November.
New River State Trail Park in Carroll County 451 Cliffview Road, Galax, VA 24333 Included in Carroll County is two portions of this 57-mile long state park that follows an abandoned railroad right-of-way and parallels the scenic and historic New River for 39 miles. The park offers biking, hiking, camping, canoeing, fishing, and great scenery - not to mention a legacy steeped in history. Birding and Wildlife viewing is superb. Chestnut Creek Falls offers a captivating sight. This park also serves as a link to numerous other outdoor recreational areas, including a town park in Fries, Mt. Rogers National Recreational Area, four Department of Game and Inland Fisheries boat launches and Shot Tower Historical State Park. New River Trail is just minutes from Claytor Lake State Park and Grayson Highlands State Park.
Stewarts Creek Wildlife Management Area Birding and Wildlife Trail Parkwood Road Lambsburg, VA 24351 This trail system is a part of the statewide Birding and Wildlife Trail system of the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. The trail system is the first statewide program of its type. Carroll County has four trails within the Blue Ridge Highlands Loop. Birding and Wildlife enthusiasts will enjoy the 1,087 acres contained within the Stewarts Creek Wildlife Management Area. Hiking trails within this area, which affords an ideal setting for leisure nature lovers. Great fishing with native trout - "no harvest" rule. Open sunrise to sundown. Admission fee. From I-77, Exit 1, turn right, heading west on Lambsburg Rd for 1.2 miles to Chestnut Grove Rd. Turn left and follow to Parkwood Rd. Turn right and proceed 1.2 miles.

Crooked Creek Wildlife Management Area 3590 Forest Oak Rd Woodlawn, VA 24381 Area includes six miles of trout streams (some sections are stocked) plus 1,600 acres of mountain land available for hunting deer, turkey, rabbits, squirrels and grouse. See visitor center staff for brochure and state fishing/hunting regulations. For fishing: daily permit required plus state fishing license. For hunting: license required. Concession stand sells permits, licenses and snacks during fee-fishing season. The area provides outdoor enthusiasts numerous habitats to explore. Hiking, watching wildlife, and photographing nature are popular activities. Wildlife viewers will find a variety of wildlife year round with periods of hawk migration adding an interesting dimension.
Trout Fishing in Carroll County (276)730-3100 Nestled within the heart of the Blue Ridge Plateau, Carroll County boasts an ideal setting for fishing within many of its mountain streams. Seasoned fishermen will attest to the vibrant quality of trout that can be hooked within Carroll County. Key streams include: Crooked Creek (brown, rainbow, and brook trout); Stewarts Creek (brook trout); Little Reed Island Creek (rainbow and brown trout); Paul's Creek (brook trout); Lovill's Creek (rainbow trout); and Laurel Fork (brook trout). Lovill's Creek Lake Recreation Area 943 Speas Mill Road Cana, VA 24317 Carroll County owns this 55 acre flood controlled lake and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries maintains a public boat ramp. The lake is stocked with largemouth bass, blue gill, sunfish, and channel catfish. Bank fishing and small electric motorboats are permitted. Also offered are handicap accessible barrier free boating and fishing opportunities. Boat access, pier fishing, and picnic shelters are all available. There is also a 1/2 mile walking trail. Open year round.
